Several years ago, Willow Creek Community Church did a survey of the congregation that revealed some very interesting and surprising data. That data brought new, relevant information to the leadership at Willow and influenced everything from strategic planning to budget and staff allocation. Since that time, the original survey has morphed into a huge research project — called REVEAL.
I. The Origins of REVEAL
A. Surveys have been used at Willow to identify demographics, to give the congregation input on sermon topics, and to determine how well the church is helping people live more like Christ.
B. The REVEAL survey was the result of strategic planning done in 2003 in anticipation of opening the new auditorium.
C. Research has always accompanied Willow’s strategic planning process.
D. The REVEAL research used a different measurement than previous research had.
- Demographic research is important, but the heart of what they wanted to find out is if they were succeeding at their mission.
- It’s difficult for churches to know if they are reaching seekers and helping people move toward full devotion to Christ, so many churches end up looking at numbers, comparing attendance at services, small groups, and classes.
- While keeping track of numbers is good, numbers don’t indicate if those activities are actually helping people move closer to Christ.
- The REVEAL research methodology sought to identify if those activities were creating heart transformation, as evidenced by an increasing love for God and an increasing love for other people.
- Jesus said that the greatest commandments are to love God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength and to love your neighbor as yourself (cf. Matthew 22:36-40, Mark 12:29-31).
