Notes from WCA’s Defining Moments: Conflict: Having the Tough Conversations
Developing a Strategic Plan
A. The situation
- Willow Creek’s ministries were each experiencing such growth and were focusing so much on their own areas that the church began to lose its identity.
- The ministry “fiefdoms” had existed unchallenged for so long that asking them to act more holistically felt like a bait and switch.
- The leadership had to communicate that getting everyone on the same page was better for the whole church and for each ministry’s part of it.
B. Lessons learned
- Strategic planning is fun in the beginning, but much of the conflict starts with implementation.
- Start the strategic planning process knowing that the result is not going to be pain-free.
